About JHCPU

Journal of Health Care for the Poor and Underserved (JHCPU) is a peer-reviewed journal which focuses on contemporary health care issues of medically underserved communities. JHCPU addresses such diverse areas as health care access, quality, costs, legislation, regulations, health promotion, and disease prevention in relation to underserved populations in North and Central America, the Caribbean, and sub-Saharan Africa. Recently, JHCPU has expanded its scope to include internally dispossessed Indigenous populations worldwide, as well as those populations enumerated above.

Through Meharry Medical College, we created PrePrint to showcase timely articles prior to print publication. Post-publication, all articles are available on Project Muse.

Regular features include research papers and reports, literature reviews, policy analyses, and evaluations of noteworthy health care programs, as well as a regular column written by members of the Association of Clinicians for the Underserved. Journal of Health Care for the Poor and Underserved is nationally recognized as the pre-eminent venue for research on the health of the underserved and is the official journal of the Association of Clinicians for the Underserved (ACU).

Issues of JHCPU appear quarterly, as they have for the past 25 years (since the journal was founded by then-President Dr. David Satcher). We also produce supplemental issues (three to four each year) and books [Natural Disasters and Public Health (2009), Free Clinics (2013), Obesity Interventions (2013)], all published by Johns Hopkins University Press.

As a distinguished HBCU, Meharry is honored to showcase Lifetimes of Dedication and Service by the Meharry School of Nursing (1900-1962) History Project Working Group. Along with the decade-by-decade contributions of Dr. Iris Shannon, the book boasts over 100 historical photographs and stories from hundreds of Meharry Medical College nursing graduates.

We also attend several major conferences (APHA, NMA, Academy Health, RCMI, among others) each year. Please feel free to stop by our exhibit booth during these conferences to discuss our publication and your interests.
